Chemistry Laboratory

Above: The chemistry laboratory is equipped with a fume cupboard, fridges and other facilities neccesary to perform chemistry at sea.

CTD Laboratory

Above: The CTD laboratory/wet laboratory is where CTD carousels can be held for sampling. A special device is used for positioning the carousel inside the laboratory that the scientific personnel can work on the bottles containing the samples. The laboratory has lots of drainage necessary for handling wet equipment and samples. The laboratory also contains the water sampling section of the surfmet systems that measures various characteristics of the water.
Constant Temperature Laboratory

Above: The Constant Temperature can - as it's name implies - be cooled at a certain temperature to preserve scientific samples during analysis. If you are having it chilled and intend to work in it for prolonged periods of time - wrap up warm..... It gets cold after a few hours!!
Container Facilities

Above: In addition to fixed laboratory space - RRS James Cook is capable of taking a wide range of containerised lab (or standard containers). The picture on the left shows the empty container slots. The bottom two slots back onto the deck lab whilst the top two (lowered through the open space visible in the left image) back onto an enclosed platform above the laboratory. Additional containers can also be stored in the hold which has the capacity to take up to 4 containers.
Dark Room
Above: In the modern age of digital cameras dark rooms are becoming redundant to a certain extent - However, we still have one onboard RRS James Cook in the event that one is needed.
