Dear Leighton
Did you know that all my elves have been talking about you?
They are all very impressed that you have been good
this year. Mrs. Claus and I are proud of you too!
The elves and I have been busy building toys and getting my
sleigh ready for the big trip. Mrs. Claus is hard at work
making me a new outfit. It seems that I've outgrown my suit
from last year! The reindeer are training each day, so they'll
be ready for the big Christmas Eve journey! Your going to be a long way from home this year and I'm going to have to loose a few extra pOunds to fit down the ship's funnel!! I hope that you keep the deck clear so we have somewhere to land the sleigh!!
So, you can see we're keeping busy, but we're looking forward
to visiting Cape Town and stopping at your Ship! I understand
that you have misplaced something somewhere in the Pacific earlier this year. The elves and I are searching the Toy Workshop to see if we might be able to find a new one for you. Please be more careful with this one!!
Please be in bed early on Christmas Eve and don't forget to hang
your stocking out with care!
Merry Christmas and Warmest Wishes!
Mr & Mrs Claus

UAV gets launched off the front of RRS Discovery - a first for a research ship?

Hello! Whilst we were docked in Govan during the mobilisation for D334 I had the chance to make some panoramic images. Click the image below or HERE to see this article.
On 25th June we committed Tom Lamden who had an illustrious wartime service with the MN serving in the Russian convoys - the Russian convoys were renowned for the losses inflicted and the brutality of the weather (The cold water could kill in seconds). During the Russian convoys 85 merchant vessels and 16 Royal Navy warships (2 cruisers, 6 destroyers, 8 other escort ships) were lost. Tom Lamden was also co-founder of the Wolverhampton branch of the Merchant Navy Association. Click >HERE or the image of below to read the article “A Final Service” which was written by one of our captains and published in Nautilus UK Telegraph (September 2008) and details Tom’s committal at sea.

After some 8000 miles of travelling and over 70 days away I am finally back in the UK. The first step is to sort out the massive collection of images that I have acquired and start putting them online – boy have we got some great footage of various bits of equipment being tested. Here’s where we went (CLICK MAP BELOW FOR LARGER VERSION)
Ok, tomorrow we head out to sea onboard RRS Discovery. I will be away for about 70 days. In this time the website will probably not get updated or any correspondence answered. However, I am looking for people (within NOC) who would like to help me maintain and expand this website and to stop the long periods of website inactivity when I’m away on the Discovery (which has no internet). If you would like to help with this website please email admin@rrsjamescook.com and I will get back to you either when we dock in Scotland next month or when I get back after this cruise.
So now it is time to return to the sea. The holiday is over and the serious work starts here. Tomorrow RRS Discovery departs St Johns to commence scientific operations. So, what can I say about St Johns? Well I have to recommend visiting this place – it is truly amazing and the people are so friendly and go out of their way to help you. I’ve written lots of exciting articles to go on the site and taken lots of pictures……. I just haven’t had the time to upload them!! I’ll feel sad about leaving tomorrow although my bank balance will hopefully be a lot better off…… There are so many people that I would love to thank for making my stay in NFL so much fun – the people from Iceberg Quest deserve special mention for helping me get some of the best whale shots imaginable! I will always look back fondly at my time here – in the words of a friend……. “You’ll be back”. Sooner rather than later.
Hello,
Probably one of the best days out ever!! Here are my pictures from a superb day out with the great people from Iceberg Quest in search of whales….. we found them and was treated to what the Iceberg Quest team described as the best whale display they have seen to date…… enjoy!!
Big thanks to the Iceberg Quest team!!

Hello, well it seems the website is taking off again. However, one minor problem is that after returning to the UK after sailing on the James Cook, I am now flying out to Canada to meet our other research ship – RRS Discovery. The problem is the Discovery does not have an internet connection and therefore I will be unable to update this website for sometime. I am looking for volunteers who will be able to help me maintain this website in the future so we don’t have periods of inactivity. In addition I encourage those onboard the RRS James Cook to send me pictures. I will be able to update the website until at least the 16th of this month – possibly up until the 22nd. When the Discovery is due into St Johns, I will be holidaying in St Johns from tomorrow and will keep the website updated with images from my travels. Leighton

Well, one of our eagle eyed observers has pointed out a very true fact. The annimated GIF of ISIS's doppler below is infact wrong. A vertical beam from a doppler would show zero Doppler shift for horizontal travel. The Doppler’s four beams are at 30 (or 20 deg) deg to the vertical. I'll get the GIF redrawn in the next few weeks!! Thanks for the feedback!! Cheers!!
Hello All. Please be patient whilst we are further developing this website and getting it fully up-and-running. There are a number of glitches which will be ironed out in the coming weeks. This website is really a one-man-show at the moment and it’s been developed in my spare time. Any feedback would be grateful. Please send it to admin@rrsjamescook.com If you encounter a problem please let me know. If you have any material you wish to contribute please email the above address. All the best Leighton
I have compiled a selection of images taken during the mobilization of JC027 and during the passage down to Tenerife. Annotations and more images will be added soon. CLICK HERE FOR IMAGES
Hello All! The website has now been migrated back online. Please expect some disruption as we make the website live…. Ohhh and sorry for the spelling on some of the pages!! We were rushing to get them online!!
The ongoing development has turned up some interesting issues which I have been addressing. The security monitoring system on the website has been working well..
I have been working on some animated GIFS in the evening to help people understand the meaning of various systems we use in oceanography. The image below shows how ISIS's doppler works and the article will feature on the website very shortly....watch this space

Hello! I'm compiling a detailed list of the countries that RRS Discovery has visited. If you know of any other countries she has visited not included in the map below please email me!!! Leighton

Hello and welcome back. After some downtime we are back online with a totally new version of the website.
The design is similar but we have been working on a lot of the background coding to produce a much better website. Over the coming weeks there will be some disruption to services as the website goes live and new articles are vetted.
We have lots of new material that is currently being worked on. These include animations of various equipment and more comprehensive documents on oceanography. Lots of stuff to keep you interested.
During the 'Go-Live' stage of the website it would be great if you could forward me feedback. This can be sent to admin@rrsjamescook.com This will be extremely useful as it will help me identify problems.
