SHRIMP

Seabed High Resolution Imaging Platform

[NMFD Website]

SHRIMP is a real-time visual observation platform for fine resolution survey of the deep ocean floor.

It is a passively towed vehicle that can operate with either a conducting or non-conducting tow cable.

It's adaptable payload includes photographic and video cameras, lighting, video recorder, altimeter, pressure sensor and pressure balanced lead acid batteries.

The robust vehicle is designed to house devices to acquire 35mm photographs, record Hi 8 or digital video and broadcast in realtime a variety of temporally and spatially scaled video through existing coaxial cable, such as those currently installed on board NERC research ships. Recent developments now allow for fibre optic communications.

Three cameras are employed, a Silicon Intensfier Target (SIT) tube monochrome video camera mainly for long range survey use, a Charged Coupled Device (CCD) solid state colour video camera for close range inspection use and a conventional (emulsion film) still camera for high quality imagery of up to 1500 frames. High intensity discharge (Thallium Iodide and Daylight) 400W lights are used for illumination for the video cameras and a 1200J flash for the still camera. Power is derived from pressure-balanced secondary batteries, with supplementary power supplied via the towing cable.
