JC036 Blog 20 - And now the end is near

So JC036 is rapidly coming to an end. The past few days have been some of the busiest with the scientists cramming as much science time into the remaining days. ISIS has made a number of trips to the seabed. The first trip was to recover the ADCP (Current Profiler - measures current speed) we placed on the seabed at the start of the cruise and to swath the area around the ADCP. The launch and initial swath of the area was left to the day watch and we successfully completed most of the swath before the night watch had the fun of collecting the big and cumbersome ADCP.

The next dive was also on the night watch and it involved recovering the experiments we had deployed from our elevator a few days previously. The elevator was still on the seabed and the night watch went around collecting the several experiments before securely attaching them to the elevator.

Once this was done ISIS returned to the surface. Once ISIS was securely on deck the command was sent to the elevator to release its weights and it began the two hour ascent to the surface. Once on the surface the ship was manoeuvred and the elevators recovery line grappled and then the whole array was brought onboard.

The scientific party have been keen to swath the coral wall we found earlier in the cruise. Our swath system is usually mounted looking down at the seabed. However, this time they want to mount it horizontal - a nice experiment for all of us! So Will went about making and fitting a frame for the multibeam on the vehicles baskets whilst the day team prepared the vehicle.

The weather seemed to be against us though and just as we were ready to dive the weather became to rough to deploy. Doug switched to his secondary plan of coring the seabed - not wanting to waste a moment of science.

the weather has now cleared and ISIS is once again being lowered.....
