JC036 Blog 19 - ISIS

Well a busy 48 hours! Our last dive 118 - was sued to deploy a series of experiments which were deployed using one of our landers. This includes experiments to bring up samples alive and monitor the samples during the ascent. For this ISIS collected so holothurians. The elevator had come down in a part of the canyon that seemed to suffer frequently from high currents and when ISIS first landed on the seabed it was a struggle to move around - then the current died and we were able to operate with little problems.

We also tried sampling one of the giant holothurians that live on the seabed. The first one we collected went well - until i dropped it and it vanished! The second one I collected I used the suction sampler and we then took it back to the elevator. However, the scientists thought that it was probably a bit big to go in the incubation experiment so the big holothurians ended up in the bio box. The next experiment was to collect small holothurians for Teresa’s experiment - the only problem was we couldn't find any of the small holothurians that she needed. I think the currents might have been too strong for them! With the search for small holothurians exhausted we moved on to deploying Will's experiments. A series of devices that are pushed into the seabed and release algae. These were quite tricky to deploy and deploying all six experiments took most of the afternoon.

With the experiments finished it was time to recover ISIS. The ascent went well and once again it was handover time just before ISIS was due to be recovered!

The next dive was the dreaded 4 letter word - swath. This is where we map the seabed using ISIS's high resolution sonar and then construct detailed maps of the terrain. The dive was going well but unforeseen circumstances prompted us to recover ISIS early and deploy to another area to continue swath operations.

The swath dive is scheduled to last around 24hrs.... Joy!
